POSITION DESCRIPTION: Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services

 

REPORTS TO:  Superintendent

 

CLASSIFICATION:  12-Month Work Calendar, Administrative Salary Schedule Level A, and Benefits in Accordance with Board Policies.

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services will oversee all aspects of the District’s curriculum, instruction and assessment programs. Direct the effective implementation, evaluation, compliance, and fiscal management to positively impact student achievement throughout the district.  Supervise the translation of district educational philosophy, goals, and objectives into active terms that directly benefit students.  Administer and supervise assigned district programs services in accordance with Board policies, federal and state laws and regulations.

 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Assisting the Superintendent in providing leadership and vision to develop, achieve, and maintain the MUSD Mission and Vision and goals, strategies, and key objectives described in the District’s Strategic Plan
  • Supervises, coordinates, directs and evaluates the activities of School Leadership, Special Needs, English Language Learning, Assessment and Evaluation, Staff Development, Early Childhood Education, Language Arts, Math/Science, and Technology.
  • Ensures compliance with Board policies in the teaching and learning areas.
  • Informs the Superintendent of all major teaching and learning activities, programs, and progress of the District.
  • Develop and evaluate effective instructional programs by analyzing and providing key information and data to administrators, community and Governing Board.
  • Provide leadership in developing a process for building administrators to monitor an accountability system for school improvement and 301 plans.
  • Provide leadership in development of effective school improvement plans for district schools with Title 1 School Improvement, NCLB, or Arizona Learns underperforming designations.
  • Manage state and federal programs using knowledge of school improvement plan for budgetary decisions.
  • Actively support School Improvement Teams.
  • Assist principals with the development of federal and state programs at the schools sites.
  • Keep current with literature and legal requirements concerning federal and state programs, including attending professional meetings, and workshops as appropriate.
  • Coordinate activities and programs in the best interest of homeless students.
  • Develop and supervise the summer school program.
  • Develop long-term and short-term goals and objectives with accompanying arrangement plans for administration, supervision, and evaluation of district curriculum and federal projects.
  • Ensure that curriculum academic services, pre-school, federal projects are effectively and productively coordinated including monitoring of budgets.
  • Supervise, coordinate, and monitor the development and implementation of grants to ensure compliance with the district’s mission and project goals, objectives, budget, completion reports, and evaluation. 
  • Conduct and direct use of appropriate system of records for students in accordance with needs, policies, regulations and law.
  • Ensure that program effectiveness, practices, expenditures, and policies are communicated effectively to each schools staff and the public.
  • Establish effective working relationship with other institutions of the region, state, and nation, which may be helpful to teachers, students, and parents.
  • Develop and submit applications and reports to federal and state education projects.
  • Use effective presentation skills when addressing students, staff, parents and the community including appropriate vocabulary and examples, clear and legible visuals and articulate and audible speech. 
  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral English skills when communicating with students, parents, and colleagues
  • The ability to visit schools and departments for observation and evaluation of initiatives
  • Continue to grow professionally through appropriate professional development opportunities.
  • Attend necessary meetings and trainings related to the positions.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Master’s Degree in Education, Educational Administration, or in a related field
  • Arizona Principal or Superintendent Certification (required)
  • Minimum five (5) years successful teaching experience in public schools
  • Minimum three (3) years successful administrative experience in public schools
  • Principal experience (highly preferred)
  • Extensive knowledge of curriculum development and various instructional strategies
  • Experience in planning and implementing programs
  • Bilingual preferred.


Other:

Salary - $120,000 - $144,000
