Job Goal:

  • To help students become proficient in )istening, speaking, reading and writing in Diné.
  • To provide guidance and instructional experiences that are academically and developmentally appropriate for each student assigned to that classroom in a safe and welcoming learning environment and teach designated material in two languages.
  • Diné Language teacher will be responsible for creating a dual-language immersion classroom environment that ensures learning and personal growth of every student, establishing effective rapport with students and motivating students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for future academic studies.

Duties &
Responsibilities:

  • Speak and behave in a professional and culturally sensitive manner with staff, children, parents, visitors, service people, et cetera, at all times.
  • Teaches content and skills in assigned subject area/s, using adopted text books and enforces the approved course of study: utilizing Arizona Dept. of Education (ADE)/Department of Diné Education (DODE) Standards through standards-based instruction.
  • Plans and teaches a developmentally and culturally appropriate curriculum and materials that fits the philosophy, curriculum & assessment framework, themes and calendar of the school and the district's mission and vision.
    • PK-I: Novice (Basic)
    • 2-5: Intermediate
    • 6-12 Proficiency (Advanced)
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned, reasonable related to the scope of the position. (Native American Week/Monthly School Board Student Recognition/33 Cultural weekly topics)
  •  Plans lessons that meet the individual needs, interests and ability level of students.
  • Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student. 
  • Creates a safe and orderly environment, conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of student.
  • Exercises supervision over students, in and out of the classroom when assigned.  
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional growth, development and competence for keep in current with the literature, new research findings, improve teaching techniques.

and attends appropriate professional meetings and conventions that are culturally appropriate.

  • Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports/grades as required.
  • Uses quarterly Pre/Post Assessments to differentiate and drive standards-based instruction.
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve problems associated with health, attitude and learning difficulties.
  • Communicates with parents, school counselors, teachers and administration to function effectively as part of the teaching team in the interest of each student.
  • Makes decisions regarding retention and promotion of students.
  • Maintains accurate, complete and correct information relating to attendance, lesson plans, I.E.P.'s and other record keeping.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student records.
  • Participates in faculty meetings and the sponsorship of student activities.
  • Maintains current inventory control of all equipment and materials in individual's classroom.  Adheres to the mandates of Navajo Nation, State and Federal Laws as well as established district policies.
  • Support and comply with grant, program and/opr funding source requirements.
