POSITION DESCRIPTION: Academic Coach

               

1.       General Description:

Work collaboratively with the school principal, District Master Teacher and the school leadership team to analyze student data and create and implement an academic achievement plan for the school. Academic Coaches lead cluster groups and provide demonstration lessons, coaching, model teaching and team teaching to career teachers. They also spend time working directly with students and teachers on strategies to improve student achievement and instructional effectiveness. Academic Coaches conduct follow up support activities with career teachers to support implementation of new instructional strategies and conduct teacher evaluations.

 

2.       Qualifications:

1.       Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, Master’s preferred.

2.       Valid Arizona teaching certificate.

3.       Strong organizational, communication (written and oral), and interpersonal skills.

4.       Extensive knowledge of curriculum and instruction appropriate for grade level campus assignment and core subject area.

5.       Ability to provide high quality instruction to students and communicate with peers and supervisors in a collegial coaching atmosphere.

6.       Extensive knowledge of instructional technology integration with core curriculum.

7.       Ability to interpret data especially for the purposes of instructional decision-making.

8.       Effective presentation skills such as classroom demonstrations, team teaching, model teaching

9.       Student data that illustrates the teachers’s ability to increase student achievement through utilizing specific instructional strategies and interventions.

10.   Experience providing professional development to adult learners preferred.

 

3.       Experience:

·         Five years experience as a successful classroom teacher as measured by performance evaluations, promotions and/or portfolio of work.

 

4.       Duties and Responsibilities:

1.       Participate in the leadership team with responsibilities to include but not limited to:

o   analyzing student data to identify student learning goals;

o   developing a school academic achievement plan;

o   coordinating a cluster assessment plan with the school assessment plan;

o   monitoring goal-setting and activities;

o   classroom follow up and goal attainment for cluster groups and Individual Growth Plans (IGPs);

o   assess teacher evaluation results and

o   support inter-rater reliability.

Academic Coach – Duties and Responsibilities continued:

 

1.       Through field testing and other methods, conduct research of effective strategies such as identification of appropriate assessments, validation of effectiveness of the strategy in relation to teacher effectiveness and student achievement.

2.       Provide assistance and guidance for teachers to maximize the effectiveness of district curriculum and instructional priorities in assigned content area.

3.       As the cluster group leader, the academic coach is responsible for

o   field testing;

o   developing the long-range cluster plan, weekly cluster group meeting records and activities with other members of the leadership team;

o   overseeing and leading, co-leading or attending cluster meetings weekly following a continuum for learning;

o   providing appropriate follow up in the classroom;

o   assessing all cluster groups’ progress toward goals.

4.       Provides equitable and sufficient support as needed for career teacher improvement following every cluster meeting through methods such as observation/feedback, model teaching, demonstration lessons and team teaching and individual teacher mentoring.

5.       Conducts classroom evaluations and conferencing for both announced and unannounced observations in a timely manner in accordance with policy.

6.       Provide professional development at their designated campus, in a district wide setting as required, and pursue presentation opportunities at state or national conferences.

7.       Attend all meetings and professional development related to curriculum, instruction and assessment practices as well as other opportunities related to duties of an Academic Coach.

8.       Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required in a timely manner in accordance with deadlines.

9.       Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy.

10.   Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.

11.   Perform other duties as assigned.

 

5.       Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress; frequent district-wide travel; repetitive hand motions and prolonged use of computer; time commitment beyond that of a traditional teacher; exercise efficient time management skills.

 

  1. Stipend

Academic Coaches receive a stipend based on availability of funds.  This salary augmentation is meant to compensate Academic Coaches for work and professional development that is required beyond contract hours directly related to completion of duties and responsibilities of an Academic Coach.  In order to be paid the full stipend the Academic Coach must meet all obligations of the position.
