Description JOB TITLE: Principal
DEPARTMENT: Site:  Coronado Elementary School
REPORTS TO: Superintendent
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
SUPERVISORY DUTIES:

SUMMARY: Directs and coordinates all phases of school operation, including educational
programs, administration and budgetary planning, discipline and counseling services.
Establishes and promotes high standards and expectations for all students for academic
performance and behavior.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Establishes master schedule for instructional programs ensuring sequential learning
experiences for all students consistent with school’s philosophy, mission statement and
instructional goals.
Supervises the instructional programs of the school, evaluating lesson plans and
observing instruction in the classroom; encourages the use of a variety of instructional
strategies and materials consistent with current research on learning and child
development.
Establishes and maintains an effective inventory system for all school supplies, materials
and equipment.
Makes recommendations to the Superintendent on any matter involving students and
teachers that may improve the quality and/or function of the school.
Conducts interviews for purpose of hiring new personnel as part of administration.
Chairs school site council and prepares agenda.
Standing Member of Technology Committee.
Actively engages in instructional leadership.
Responsible for monthly Governing School Board reports.
Schedules, sets agenda, chairs and facilitates faculty meetings.
Stays current with NCLB requirements including, but not limited to, staff development and
school/parent compact.
Uses marketing strategies to effectively promote school to the greater community.
Ensures general safety of the school facility with input from school maintenance
personnel.


STAFF:
Oversees those assigned to maintain staff records on absence, sick leave, and
compensatory time, following Board regulations.
Supervises school health services and administers first aid services when the nurse is
absent.
Is involved with all general and monthly faculty meetings and aids faculty in staying
current with all district policy and ADE directives.
Interviews and recommends to the Superintendent candidates for classified and
certificated positions in the District
Evaluates performance of certificated and classified staff members in order to improve
effectiveness of instruction for their school.

CURRICULUM:
Prepares class schedules, coordinating classes and times with instructors and the
requirements of the state-mandated standards.
Supervises staffing and establishes student rosters.
Reviews lesson plans to determine coverage of state standards.
Monitors new initiatives to ensure full implementation according to district goals.
FINANCES:
Oversees assigned secretarial staff responsible for student activities funds and the
maintenance of USFR required cash receipts and disbursements journal.
Oversees those assigned to be responsible for student attendance reporting and
maintenance of Arizona Public School Register accounting and data collection.
Balances requisitions for purchases to budget sheets prepared by the business manager.


STUDENTS:
Participates in the creation of regulations and procedures pertaining to student conduct
and maintains student discipline in the school in accordance with rules, procedures, and
prescribed policies.
Supervises instruction, guidance, discipline classification, promotion, and graduation of all
students.
Supervises maintenance and security of all student records.


PUPIL RELATIONS:
Oversees staff responsible for establishing and scheduling parent/teacher conferences as
directed by board policy, providing two annual conferences.
Attends educational meetings, seminars, and workshops.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Ability to model effective use of current instructional technology.
Ability to apply knowledge of Arizona Academic Standards.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a
variety of situations.
Ability to establish priority ordering of tasks necessary to complete a project and convey
these understandings and priorities to others.
Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community
members.
Ability to cope with job stress while exhibiting patience and tact when dealing with others.
Perform all duties in accordance with Federal and State laws, district procedures and
Board policies.
Ability to handle confrontation and conflict without an emotional response.
Produce accurate work and complete assignments with minimal supervision.


QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Valid Certificate as a school principal.
Masters degree with advanced graduate work.
At least five years of successful classroom teaching experience preferred.
Experience with supervision and management.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Office and school environment. This position regularly works indoors and may be required to
work outdoors on occasion. The noise level in the work environment is generally quiet to
moderate and may become excessively noisy at times. Will have contact with students,
employees and the public.
