Job Summary:
- The K-12 Science Education Specialist is critical to providing required support of the federal requirements for science standards and assessment, and various programs interrelated to science.
- Provide essential support in the implementation plan as it relates to science by providing expertise in science content and best practices for K-12 Science and Science, Technolocy, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) instruction and assessment, in the development and implementation of Arizona Science Standards as adopted by the State Board of Education.
- Collaborate with other K-12 Standards team members and with other members of the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) to provide the field with coordinated, cohesive, and effective support as it relates to the implementation of Arizona Science Standards.
· Occasional in-state and out-of-state travel is required for this position.
The Arizona Department of Education currently utilizes a hybrid work environment, with up to two days of remote work (contingent upon business needs). Candidates should apply with an ability and willingness to work in-office up to five days per week as business needs necessitate.
Job Duties:
- Develop and deliver professional development to support K-12 science instruction and support K-12 Academic Standards and educational best practices required for implementing quality standards-based science education. This includes face-to-face professional development, webinars, and online facilitated coursework.
- Develop instructional support materials and evaluate and curate external resources that support implementation of Arizona's Science Standards teaching and learning.
- Assist in the maintenance of the science resource pages on the ADE website, including ADE's Content Management System, and provide information for related current events pages, the science portions of the K-12 standards newsletter, and other social media or communications as needed.
- Facilitate and/or provide guidance during statewide committees to support the development and/or assessment of Arizona academic standards and other Arizona standards (Career & Technical Education (CTE), Early Childhood Education (ECE), etc.) that are relevant to the Science fields.
- Assist with the implementation of various K-12 Science and STEM academic standards programs and initiatives as they relate to and support standards.
- Provide professional development, technical assistance and compliance monitoring as applicable to support science focused programs.
- Collaborate and participate in statewide efforts to implement the state Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan and other statewide initiatives as they relate to science education, including internal ADE and external organization partners.

- A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Science, or STEM related field, or equivalent experience to substitute for the degree, is required.

Selective Preferences:
Preference will be given to those applicants with:
- District or state level experience developing standards, curriculum, and/or assessment.
- Degree or other evidence of content knowledge expertise in the areas of physical, earth, or space sciences.

Retirement:
You will be required to participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) upon your 27th week of employment, subject to waiting period. On or shortly after, your first day of employment you will be provided with enrollment instructions and effective date.
