QUALIFICATIONS 

  1. Valid Arizona State Nursing License
  2. At least two (2) years of experience as RN or Public Health Nurse or public school nurse, preferred.
    1. Board Alternative: Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Governing Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
  3. Current certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/First Aid Certification
  4. Ability to obtain a valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
  5. Ability to obtain National Provider Identifier (NPI) Number and AHCCCS ID in order to participate in the Medicaid School Based Claiming Program
  6. Knowledge, skill and or experience in the implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) strategies or be willing to receive training in those strategies

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To provide assessment, screening, planning, intervention, evaluation, and/or referrals concerning the health and medical care needs of students to minimize absences due to illness, maximize educational opportunities, and create a healthy school climate.

  1. Assist in the establishment and maintenance of a comprehensive school health program.
  2. Perform nursing assessment for students who are ill or injured; apply appropriate theory as basis for providing first aid, daily school nursing care, intervention and referrals for those students.
  3. Administer medicines and treatments, and provide care to special needs students.
  4. Perform health screenings, and conduct health counseling and education. 
  5. Assist faculty in identifying and understanding student health problems and advise on modification of the education program to meet the health needs of individual students.
  6. Work collaboratively with health care providers, students, parents, school district staff and community agencies to ensure access and continuity of care for students, aligned with all privacy laws.
  7. Participate in staffing and child study team meetings, as needed.
  8. Collect information about the health and developmental status of the student in a systematic and continuous manner.
  9. Develop individual health care plan (ICHP) when needed with specific goals, nursing diagnosis, and interventions delineating school-nursing actions unique to students’ needs and for incorporation into the student’s individualized educational plan (IEP).
  10. Provide guidance, counseling and health education to students, parents and employees as necessary.
  11. Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with state and federal law, and Board of Education policies.
  12.  Prepare and submit mandated reports to ensure compliance with state immunization regulations and Board of Education policies. Implement Board policy concerning the exclusion and readmission of students according to the Arizona Department of Health regarding certain infections and contagious diseases.
  13. Make home visits, when needed.
