Salary: Starting at $47,000 (Dependent on experience/education)

Position Overview

We are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable 5th Grade Writing/Grammar teacher for a departmentalized teaching model, where each teacher specializes in a core subject area and also teaches History to their homeroom class. The ideal candidate is committed to rigorous academics, structured classroom environments, and content-rich instruction, and thrives in a collaborative team setting.

What You’ll Teach in 5th Grade Writing & Grammar/History

History (Core Knowledge Sequence):

  • Early American Civilizations: Explore the achievements of the Maya, Aztec, and Inca, focusing on their advancements in agriculture, astronomy, governance, and cultural legacy.

  • European Exploration, Trade, and the Clash of Cultures: Dive into the Age of Exploration, examining the motivations, key explorers, and cultural exchanges between Europeans and indigenous peoples.

  • Westward Expansion & The Civil War: Teach the history of American westward movement, the impact on Native Americans, the causes and key events of the Civil War, and the challenges of Reconstruction.

  • Russia: Early Growth and Expansion: Study the rise of Kievan Rus', the Mongol invasion, and the early expansion of Russia, with a focus on its cultural and political development.

English Language Arts (ELA - Core Knowledge Sequence):

  • Classic American Literature:  Students will read works such as Little Women (Louisa May Alcott), exploring themes of family, personal growth, and moral integrity, as well as episodes from Don Quixote (Miguel de Cervantes), which introduces them to the themes of idealism, chivalry, and adventure.

  • Writing Skills: Students will develop their writing fluency through narrative writing, persuasive essays, and research projects. They will also work on improving their grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure, writing structured paragraphs and moving toward more complex compositions.

  • Vocabulary Development: Emphasis will be placed on word choice, context clues, and the study of Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes to build academic vocabulary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach 5th grade students in the subject areas of History and English Language Arts using the Core Knowledge curriculum, Hillsdale College K-12 curriculum, and supplemental classical texts.

  • Deliver instruction through explicit, teacher-led lessons, Socratic dialogue, and direct engagement with primary sources and rich literature.

  • Instill a deep understanding of grammar, composition, and vocabulary through structured writing instruction and classical reading.

  • Guide students through the study of history and civics, providing historical context and encouraging moral reflection.

  • Partner with other 5th grade teachers in a departmentalized structure to ensure curricular coherence and academic growth across all subjects.

  • Maintain high academic and behavioral expectations in a warm, disciplined, and joyful learning environment.

  • Regularly assess student progress and provide targeted support to ensure mastery of content.

  • Collaborate with faculty and participate in ongoing professional development aligned with the school’s mission and values.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card

  • Strong content knowledge in history, literature, writing, and grammar

  • Experience with and/or passion for classical education, the Core Knowledge curriculum, or Hillsdale curriculum preferred

  • Strong classroom management and a deep commitment to virtue-based education

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a departmentalized teaching model
